Radio host Rush Limbaugh called a Georgetown University law student, Sandra Fluke, who was testifying in favor of mandatory employer health coverage of contraception a “slut” and “prostitute” on his radio show last week, according to The Christian Science Monitor.

“If we are going to have to pay for this then we want something in return, Ms. Fluke,” Limbaugh said on his radio show earlier this week. “And that would be the videos of all this sex posted online so we can see what we’re getting for our money.”

Limbaugh made the comment after Fluke testified in front of a nonofficial congressional committee.

All I can say is “WOW.” I am totally shocked and at a loss of words. I am not sure why Limbaugh feels like he has the authority to say such outlandish statements at all, but especially LIVE.

First of all, contraception is a good and smart measure for those engaging in sexual activity. It allows females (and males) to plan for a family. It gives them choice. To equate contraception to being a slut is simply appalling, especially since the comment was aimed at one individual.

What was he thinking? Not only does this cause a lot of heated debate and kind of throws a negative spin on the Republican cause (which he supports), but it also opens him up for a lawsuit.

Defamation is when a statement can hurt/damage one’s reputation. And Limbaugh defamed Fluke when he called her a “slut” and “prostitute.”

I’d say that Fluke has a very good case against defamation, especially since she is a private figure and the statement was definitely aimed at her.

About Haley Behre

I graduated from Syracuse University in December 2011 with majors in newspaper journalism and women and gender studies. Using these majors, I aspire to become a journalist who writes about human rights issues. I have held internships at the Syracuse New Times, Dash Media PR Firm, Syracuse Post-Standard and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. I also had an internship at the Not For Sale Campaign Syracuse chapter, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating human trafficking. I was born in Seoul, Korea on September 30, 1990 and moved to the United States before I was one year old. When I was 8, my family and I moved to Norwich, England for three years. While I was here I was immersed into a new culture and got to experience many things other children my age do not get to. Over the three years, I visited Ireland, France and the Netherlands several times, and Belgium, Wales and Sweden once. In the winter of 2010, I got an amazing opportunity to visit Kenya for a month. This was by far the single most eye-opening experience of my life thus far. The natural beauty of the landscape and its people do not compare to anything I have seen. I currently intern for the Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press in the hopes of getting a full-time job at a newspaper or non-profit after.
