Authorities Bust Pedophile Network, 10 Arrested

According to CNN, 10 people were arrested Thursday for allegedly capturing, viewing and disseminating images of children doing sexual acts in an expansive international pedophile network.

The 10 arrested in Italy, France, Portugal and the United States do not include the 112 others that Italian officers said in a news release “have been reported to law enforcement in those and other countries for’ association with crime organizations (that were) producing and distributing pedophile material.'”

Those 112 people are part of a larger network consisting of more than 700 people.

According to the article, “the network featured videos and photos of children under 11 years old being sexually abuse and exploited. In one particularly graphic example, a man in one video is depicted abusing a baby who was only a few months old, said Domenico Di Somma, who heads a special internet investigation unit out of Siracusa in Sicily.”

To think that innocent children are being subjected to such awful acts and exploited for it is absolutely sickening. However, I am so glad that forces both domestically and internationally have been able to arrest those involved. Pedophilia is not acceptable. As I understand, Russia recently equated pedophilia and being gay, saying that they are essentially the same thing. Russia is sadly mistaken. Being gay is consensual … it is two consenting adults (or minors) engaging in a (sexual) relationship. Whereas, pedophilia is not consensual. It is an adult taking advantage of an innocent child who is not at an age where he/she can understand what is going on. That is wrong and I am glad that a network of pedophiles is beginning to unravel.

About Haley Behre

I graduated from Syracuse University in December 2011 with majors in newspaper journalism and women and gender studies. Using these majors, I aspire to become a journalist who writes about human rights issues. I have held internships at the Syracuse New Times, Dash Media PR Firm, Syracuse Post-Standard and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. I also had an internship at the Not For Sale Campaign Syracuse chapter, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating human trafficking. I was born in Seoul, Korea on September 30, 1990 and moved to the United States before I was one year old. When I was 8, my family and I moved to Norwich, England for three years. While I was here I was immersed into a new culture and got to experience many things other children my age do not get to. Over the three years, I visited Ireland, France and the Netherlands several times, and Belgium, Wales and Sweden once. In the winter of 2010, I got an amazing opportunity to visit Kenya for a month. This was by far the single most eye-opening experience of my life thus far. The natural beauty of the landscape and its people do not compare to anything I have seen. I currently intern for the Reporters Committee for the Freedom of the Press in the hopes of getting a full-time job at a newspaper or non-profit after.
