According to CNN, officials in the northern Mexican state of Sonora said eight people were arrested for allegedly killing two boys and one woman as sacrifices for Santa Muerte- the saint of death.
The accused- many of whom are from the same family,- killed their victims and offered their blood to the saint at the alter as they asked him for protection, according to Jose Larrinaga, spokesman for state prosecutors. The first victim was allegedly killed in 2009 and the last this month. Two of the victims were 10-year-old boys.
Santa Muerte is generally portrayed as “a skeleton dressed in a long robe and carrying a scythe” and is a favorite among criminals and drug traffickers, according to the article. However, the saint is not recognized by the Catholic Church.
